Your compassion could help save someone’s life

Volunteers at Crisis Services of North Alabama do vital work. They help people navigate difficult situations on HELPline, serve as advocates for victims during forensic exams, and even ride along with police when they respond to domestic violence calls.

Help people navigate difficult situations

As a HELPline Crisis Counselor, you’ll use empathy and active listening to help people navigate their toughest moments. Whether you’re helping someone through a crisis or simply being a voice of calm, your role is essential in providing the support callers need to feel heard and empowered.

Our training teaches active listening skills and how to identify caller concerns. You’ll also gain knowledge of community resources and key issues around domestic violence, sexual assault, and mental health.

Support survivors during forensic exams

You’ll advocate for the victim before, during, and after sexual assault and domestic violence forensic exams as a Forensic Exam Advocate. In this role, you help a survivor by:

  • Reiterating it wasn’t their fault, they are not alone, and they are in a safe space
  • Explaining your role, confidentiality, the exam process, and what comes next
  • Letting them know they are in complete control at all times and you’re there for them

Provide support on domestic violence calls with police

If you become a Domestic Violence Responder, you’ll accompany Huntsville City Police on calls involving domestic violence. You’ll provide information and packets with resources for counseling, legal assistance, and other services. You’ll also provide comfort items for primary victims and their children.
